Japanese INRO box in laquer wood. A traditional case for holding small objects, a inro generally consists of several tiny boxes neatly nested in a stack held together by a cord that runs through runners down one side, under the bottom and then up the other side. It commonly carried medicines or identity seals. Ours was made during the Meiji ("Enlightened Rule") period (1868-1912).
