$150.00Impressive High Relief Chinese Cinnabar Tray with two five toed Imperial Dragons dancing around the Pearl of Wisdom. It also has wonderful floral carvings around the inside and outside rims of the tray. This is a wonderful example of cinnabar from China. The lacquer was applied coat by coat to the core in up to 300 coats, or until a thickness that could be carved was achieved. This requires an enormous amount of time and labor, as each layer must dry and be polished before the next layer is applied. Since lacquer hardens slowly, only one layer could be applied per day. When all the layers are applied, the craftsman can carve an elaborate design into the surface.
